Navy ship puts on a show off O.C.
Slideshow: Occasionally you’ll see a Navy amphibious assault ship offshore flying helicopters, but one seen Tuesday well off the San Clemente coast also was flying other aircraft that could be heard on shore.
Here is an update of a story posted Tuesday:
An unusual combination of sight and sound appeared Tuesday afternoon off the coast – a Navy amphibious assault ship, well offshore, with flying aircraft that could be heard in San Clemente even though they were too far away to see clearly with the naked eye.
Here are some pictures, captured with a strong telephoto lens from the street above T-Street Beach.
The photos indicate it’s the USS Peleliu because of its ship number and comparing pictures of the Peleliu online. Multiple calls to the Navy in San Diego could not confirm whether the Peleliu was in the water off San Clemente on Tuesday. No one reached was authorized to say.
The Peleliu flies helicopters and Harrier jets, which evidently were the aircraft you may have heard Tuesday.
