Man shot, killed at high school was Marine
An unidentified driver died after an officer-involved shooting in San Clemente High School's parking lot Tuesday morning.
SAN CLEMENTE – A man who died after being shot by a sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop at a high school parking lot was a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, base officials confirmed.
Orange County Sheriff's Department officials have released few details as to what prompted the shooting or what caused the deputy to pull over the vehicle. On Wednesday morning, sheriff's officials declined to release the man's name. An autopsy was carried out Wednesday morning, but sheriff's officials have not released the results.
By Wednesday afternoon, Camp Pendleton officials confirmed that the man who died in the officer-involved shooting was a Marine stationed at the base, but declined to give the man's name, rank or time of service.
Identifying information of the Marine cannot be disclosed until 24 hours after next of kin has been notified, said Capt. Barry Edwards, spokesman for the base.
The shooting occurred about 4:40 a.m. in the parking lot of the school at 700 Avenida Pico, Sheriff's Department Lt. Roland Chacon said.
The deputy tried to pull over the driver on a traffic violation when the man drove through a gate and into the school parking lot, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Sheriff's Department.
Since the shooting, officials have not outlined what prompted the deputy to fire but authorities said a confrontation led the officer to shoot.
The shooting happened before classes began, prompting investigators to close about half the school's parking lot along Avenida Pico. Classes continued as scheduled.
The man was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, said Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority.
Amormino said the driver died Tuesday after the shooting.
The deputy was not injured, officials said.
As is the case in officer-involved shootings, the Orange County District Attorney's Office is investigating.
The District Attorney's Office does not comment on ongoing investigations but releases a report at the end of the investigation, said Farrah Emami, spokeswoman for the office.
The originating agency, meaning the Sheriff's Department, has the authority to release information, she said.
