Local surfers shine on two fronts
Surfing America Prime season and NSSA Explorer season are under way for 2010-11.
The Surfing America Prime and National Scholastic Surfing Association Explorer circuits are in gear for 2010, with Orange County surfers ripping.
Kulia Doherty of San Clemente and Kanoa Igarashi of Huntington Beach won their divisions in the first event Sunday, while at the first NSSA Explorer contest of 2010-11, Huntington Beach's Shaun Thompson and Andrew Niemann won divisions.
The NSSA Explorer season resumes this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, at 9th Street, Huntington Beach. The next Prime event is Oct. 9 at Church Beach, San Onofre.
At DMJ's, Doherty won the Prime contest's Girls Under 16 final. Lulu Erkeneff of Dana Point took fourth. Igarashi won the Boys Under 14 division. Jacob Davis of Capistrano Beach took second, San Clemente's Colt Ward fourth. Lani Doherty of San Clemente was second in Girls Under 18, sister Kulia taking fourth. Derek Peters of Huntington Beach took second in Boys Under 18.
At Huntington Beach Pier, Shaun Thompson won the longboarding with his brother Nathan taking third. San Clemente's Christian Stutzman was second. Niemann won the boys' division with Chandler Stirrat of Huntington Beach taking fourth.
Shaun Thompson also was second in junior men's shortboarding, with San Clemente High's Breyden Taylor third. In the men's division, Chris Love of Huntington Beach took fourth.
San Clemente's Malia Osterkamp was third in the girls' division, fourth in the women's final. Ben Seaberry of Huntington Beach took second in menehunes, Noah Hohenester of San Clemente fourth.
